Red Dead Online launches in beta tomorrow

A month after launching to universal acclaim, Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally getting its online component. Red Dead Online launches in beta this week, with access opening for users starting tomorrow.

The roll out is admittedly a bit convoluted. Rockstar is clearly staggering things here, so as to avoid a repeat of the clustereff it experienced a few years back with the GTA Online launch. Those who purchased the $90 Ultimate Edition get first dibs, starting tomorrow. From there, new slots will open daily, based on when users first played the title, before things open to everyone on Friday.

The online version of the wildly popular western builds on the original title’s multiplayer modes, with both competitive and co-op elements. A narrative of sorts will tie the title together, though it will understandably be less complex than the one found in the offline single player, according to Variety. The open-world gameplay will include hunting, fishing and riding with posses of up to seven players.

The title has already proven a massive hit for Rockstar, moving more than 17 million copies in its first two weeks.

Hidden files hint at a possible PC version of Red Dead Redemption 2

At launch, the long-awaited (and much hyped) western adventure that is Red Dead Redemption 2 is only available on the PS4 and Xbox One.

That might not be the case forever, though. Code hidden within the game’s mobile companion app suggests that a PC version could be in the works.

Last week, we wrote about Red Dead Redemption 2’s companion app, which lets you rip the in-game map off the TV and put it on a nearby tablet, instead. No more pausing just to figure out if you and your horse are still headed in the right direction.

Some tinkerers over at GTAForums (as spotted by RockstarIntel) have been poking around that very app, and have unearthed a few interesting parameters left behind.

Two unused parameters tucked into the app (“PARAM_companionAutoConnectIpPC” and “CommandIsPcVersion”) mention the PC platform by name, but there are also dozens of different parameters referencing advanced graphic settings that generally don’t exist on consoles.

While the original Red Dead Redemption never made it beyond the console, this wouldn’t be Rockstar’s first foray into the PC world. Many of their most popular games landed on PC… eventually. GTAV, for example, launched on consoles in September of 2013 and made its way to Windows in April of 2015. L.A. Noire shipped for consoles in May of 2011, and hit PCs near the end of the same year.

Adding fuel to the fire: A few months back, a mention of a PC build reportedly popped up in a Rockstar designer’s LinkedIn profile.

With all that said: As with all things relating to video game releases, don’t get your hopes up too high until you hear it straight from the developer’s mouth. While the signs point to a PC build having existed in some form at some point, there’s always the possibility that these parameters are left over from the company’s own internal testing, or that plans will change.

Rockstar releases second Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay trailer

We are less than a month away from the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, the sequel to one of the most popular games of the PS3/Xbox era. Red Dead Redemption launched in 2010, meaning that fans of the franchise have waited for almost a decade to continue their adventure through the early American frontier.

Today, Rockstar Games has released a little over 4 minutes of gameplay footage, showing off a special glimpse of first-person mode. Usually a third-person game, Rockstar has let slip that the next game will have a first-person mode for folks who want to fully immerse.

Part of the draw to RDR comes from the beauty of its open world experience. With RDR2, Rockstar has challenged itself to make everything bigger, better, and more dynamic. In this trailer, the company shows off small but significant details like the dynamic weather (see Arthur Morgan’s frosty breath in the snow) and also gives us a deeper look at important game mechanics like Dead Eye.

As part of the expansion of the RDR world itself, players are also getting even more customization options, with the ability to decide what Arthur wears, eats, and how well he handles his own physical hygiene. Though it’s not show in this particular trailer, we’ve also learned that players can customize their horses as well.

You can check out the full gameplay trailer below. Red Dead Redemption 2 is available starting October 26.

Watch the West go wild again in new Red Dead Redemption II trailer

Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption II is probably one of the most hotly anticipated games of next year, and now there’s a trailer for it showing some actual visuals from the game. The trailer gives us our first sense of story, too, which basically looks like it’s about outlaws getting up to no good in the Old West and then trying to outlaw the law, and rivals. The sequel to Red… Read More
